Senator Lindsey Graham Defends Massive US Military Spending in Iran as Critical National Investment
During a recent appearance on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) vigorously defended the United States' escalating military operations in Iran, which are currently costing an estimated $1 billion per day. Host Maria Bartiromo pressed the senator on the staggering financial burden, noting that the conflict has driven oil prices up by 27% in a week and that the Pentagon is seeking billions more in funding.
Graham's Justification: Preventing a Nuclear Threat
In response, Graham labeled the expenditure as the "best money ever spent" for America. He framed the military campaign as a vital investment to dismantle what he described as a "religious Nazi regime" in Iran that is allegedly pursuing nuclear weapons to target the United States. "What's it worth to America to take down a religious Nazi regime who's trying to build a nuclear weapon to deliver to America? That's a really good investment," Graham asserted.
Emphasizing the imperative of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities, Graham warned of dire consequences if the country were to succeed. "What would it cost America if Iran had 11 nuclear bombs to threaten us? They would hold us hostage," he stated, underscoring his view that the current military costs are justified to avert such a scenario.
Iran's Nuclear Program and US Military Superiority
Iran has consistently maintained that its enriched uranium supply is solely for nuclear energy and research purposes. However, most of its stockpile is reported to be around 60% purity, which experts say far exceeds the levels needed for civilian use, though it remains below the 90% threshold required for weapons-grade material.
Even if Iran were to achieve nuclear weapons capability, its arsenal would be significantly smaller than that of the United States. According to data from the Federation of American Scientists released in January 2025, the US military stockpile includes an estimated 3,700 active nuclear warheads, highlighting a vast disparity in nuclear power.
Graham's Praise for Trump and Future Defense Budgets
Senator Graham also praised former President Donald Trump, calling him a "man of peace and business" who has saved the world from "real chaos." He expressed strong support for Trump's proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for 2027 and a supplemental $50 billion defense package that the Pentagon plans to present to Congress soon.
"Donald Trump is resetting the world in a way nobody could have dreamed of a year ago. Our military is the best of all time," Graham declared.
