24 Sussex Drive has been the subject of ongoing debate about its condition. A 2008 report estimated $10 million in necessary repairs, but successive governments delayed action. In 2021, the Trudeau government announced a comprehensive renovation plan, but it was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The current project aims to modernize the residence while preserving its heritage character.
“This is a long-overdue project that will ensure the prime minister's residence is safe, functional, and representative of Canada,” said a spokesperson for Public Services and Procurement Canada. During the renovation, Prime Minister Mark Carney and his family will continue to reside at Rideau Cottage, the temporary residence used by previous prime ministers. The work is scheduled to take approximately two to three years, after which the Carneys are expected to move back into 24 Sussex.
