File Hills Police Plans Expansion to Three Communities

The File Hills First Nations Police Service (FHFNPS) has announced plans to expand its services into three Indigenous communities near Regina, Saskatchewan. The expansion aims to enhance public safety and strengthen community policing in the region.

Expansion Details

According to officials, the police service will extend its coverage to include the following communities: Okanese First Nation, Star Blanket Cree Nation, and Little Black Bear First Nation. This move is part of a broader effort to provide consistent law enforcement services across Treaty 4 territory.

Chief of FHFNPS, Joseph Morin, stated that the expansion will involve hiring additional officers and increasing patrols. “Our goal is to build trust and ensure that every community feels safe and supported,” he said.

Community Response

Local leaders have welcomed the announcement. Chief Evelyn Kaysaywaysemat of Okanese First Nation noted that the expanded police presence will address long-standing concerns about response times and crime prevention. “This is a positive step toward reconciliation and community safety,” she said.

Residents have expressed optimism, with many hoping for improved relations between police and Indigenous youth. The service plans to implement cultural sensitivity training for all officers.

Funding and Timeline

The expansion is funded through a combination of federal and provincial grants, along with contributions from the participating First Nations. The timeline for full implementation is expected to be 18 to 24 months, with initial patrols beginning in select areas by early 2027.

FHFNPS currently serves several other communities in the region and has been recognized for its community-oriented approach. The expansion is seen as a model for Indigenous-led policing across Canada.
