Sean Davis, CEO of the right-wing media outlet The Federalist, sparked outrage after proposing extreme measures including the “sterilization of all foreign visitors” to the United States, following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship. The Court ruled 6-3 on June 30, 2026, rejecting President Donald Trump’s executive order that sought to overturn the constitutional guarantee.
Davis lists extreme proposals
In a Tuesday post on X, Davis outlined several “ways forward” after the ruling. His list included “Deny entry to all pregnant foreigners,” “Deny entry to all female foreigners,” and “Require sterilization of all foreign visitors prior to entry.” He also suggested that states could stop issuing birth certificates to noncitizens and, in his most radical proposal, called for the “Dissolution of the Union,” arguing that “a nation which can’t even restrict who gets to be a citizen isn’t a nation.”
Backlash from critics
The proposals drew immediate condemnation. New York Times columnist David French called the list “absolute BONKERS,” adding, “It is absolutely bizarre that these people believe that the continued application of a rule that has existed for generation after generation ― as we’ve grown to the most powerful and prosperous free nation in world history ― is somehow the root of our national demise.” Other critics reacted strongly to the sterilization proposal. Emily Zanotti tweeted, “Good to know we’re not immediately jumping to anything psychoti…oh,” while Chase Oliver wrote, “When you hate immigrants so much that you want government run sterilization. These kind of weirdos want to completely undo the country.” The account Republicans against Trump asked, “What’s wrong with these people???”
Ogles introduces similar bill
On the same day, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a bill that would prevent pregnant women who are not U.S. citizens from entering the country. Ogles stated, “I will not allow SCOTUS to denigrate American sovereignty. Congress can overrule their decision by passing my Anchors Away Act.”
Davis responds to backlash
In a follow-up post, Davis defended his list, saying, “that’s what happens when John Roberts tries to cosplay as King Solomon. He somehow only gives us worse and more extreme options than what were previously available.”
Trump calls for congressional action
President Trump responded to the Supreme Court ruling by urging Congress to end birthright citizenship without a constitutional amendment. “No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship. They will have my Complete and Total Support!,” he wrote on Truth Social.
