Fallen Officer Tyrone Magbitang Made Lasting Impression

Tyrone Magbitang, a 27-year-old Constable in training with the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), died in a horrific collision with a transport truck near Aylmer, Ontario, just over 24 hours ago. A second DRPS cadet involved in the crash remains in hospital with life-threatening wounds, listed in critical condition.

Devastation Across the Force

DRPS expressed deep grief, stating, "Although his time with our Service was far too short, Tyrone made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. He will be remembered for his kindness, professionalism, and the tremendous potential he brought to our organization. His loss is deeply felt throughout the Durham Regional Police Service and the wider policing community."

Former Toronto Police constable and media crime specialist Ross McLean said, "He was an amazing young guy who was well known and well respected. The officers at Durham Police are devastated. Many knew him well, liked him and respected him." McLean added that colleagues knew Magbitang was destined to be a great officer.

A Lifelong Dream Cut Short

Magbitang had pursued his goal of becoming a police officer with determination. He studied police foundations in college and worked as a Special Constable in Durham Region since 2023, often in the courts. In April 2026, he was selected as a police constable recruit, taking the next step toward his lifelong dream. DRPS noted, "Tyrone was a compassionate, dedicated, and service-driven individual who believed deeply in helping others and making a positive difference in the community."

Chief Peter Moreira and the force had been looking forward to welcoming Magbitang and the other cadet to full-time duty after their training at the Ontario Police College.

Investigation Underway

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating the crash. The truck driver was not injured, and no charges have been laid as the probe remains in its early stages. DRPS has asked for privacy for Magbitang's family and loved ones during this difficult time.

DRPS concluded, "On behalf of the Durham Regional Police Service, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Tyrone’s family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. We mourn alongside them and remain committed to supporting all those affected by this unimaginable loss."
