Edmonton police are asking for public assistance after an 81-year-old man died in hospital over the weekend, weeks after a vehicle collision on 97 Street near the Yellowhead. The victim succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, July 4, police reported Monday.
Details of the Crash
The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. on June 24. The senior was driving a Kia Seltos northbound on 97 Street and attempted to turn left onto 132 Avenue. At that moment, a southbound Kia Optima driven by a 22-year-old man struck the victim's vehicle. The elderly man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and initially listed in stable condition, according to police.
The 22-year-old driver of the Optima and his passenger, a 21-year-old woman, were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released. Investigators have ruled out impairment as a contributing factor in the collision.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
On Monday, the Edmonton Police Service major collision investigations section urged anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the police non-emergency line. The police are seeking additional information to piece together the events leading up to the collision.
According to police data, this marks the 10th fatal collision in Edmonton in 2026. The city has seen a series of traffic fatalities this year, prompting ongoing safety campaigns.
Victim and Aftermath
The victim, identified only as an 81-year-old man, died in hospital weeks after the crash. His name has not been released pending family notification. The collision occurred on a busy stretch of 97 Street north of the Yellowhead, an area known for frequent traffic.
