A Durham Regional Police Service recruit has died and another is in life-threatening condition following a collision near the Ontario Police College. The deceased recruit has been identified as Tyrone Magbitang, according to Durham police.
Details of the Incident
The collision occurred on July 8, 2026, near the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, Ontario. Emergency services responded to the scene, where two recruits were found with serious injuries. Magbitang was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other recruit was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira expressed condolences, stating, "This is a tragic loss for our service and the entire policing community. Our thoughts are with the families and colleagues of those involved."
Investigation Underway
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating the cause of the collision. Initial reports suggest that the vehicle carrying the recruits was involved in a single-vehicle crash. The OPP has not released further details pending the investigation.
