Sask. woman's petition aims to keep RCAF Snowbirds flying

A Saskatchewan woman has launched a petition urging the federal government to keep the RCAF Snowbirds air demonstration squadron in the air, after the Ministry of Defense announced the team would be grounded at the end of this season.

Petition aims to reverse grounding decision

Jana Kitts of Regina penned the petition, which calls on the Ministry of Defense to reconsider its decision. The Snowbirds, officially the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, have been a staple of air shows across Canada and the United States for decades.

“They’re Canada’s team,” Kitts said in an interview. “They represent the best of our military and inspire young Canadians to pursue careers in aviation.” The petition has garnered thousands of signatures since its launch, reflecting widespread support for the squadron.

Impact of the grounding

The grounding, set to take effect after the 2026 season, would end the Snowbirds’ 55-year history of performances. The Department of National Defence cited budget constraints and a need to focus resources on operational readiness as reasons for the decision. However, critics argue the squadron plays a vital role in recruitment and public relations.

The Snowbirds perform at approximately 50 shows annually, reaching millions of spectators. According to a 2022 report by the Canadian Forces, the squadron’s recruitment value is estimated at over $10 million per year in advertising equivalency.

Community response

Kitts’ petition has drawn support from veterans, aviation enthusiasts, and local politicians. “The Snowbirds are a symbol of Canadian pride,” said Saskatchewan MP Andrew Scheer. “I urge the government to listen to the people and keep them flying.”

The petition will be presented to Parliament once it reaches 10,000 signatures. As of July 8, 2026, it has over 7,500 signatures.
