The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has selected nine applicants for its spring class under the Direct Entry Officers (DEO) program, a streamlined recruitment initiative that offers a $10,000 incentive to experienced officers. The program, introduced in December, attracted 32 applicants seeking to join the force through an accelerated training path.
Incentive Program Details
Under the DEO program, experienced officers undergo a seven-week training course, significantly shorter than the nine-month regimen for inexperienced recruits. To receive the $10,000 bonus, officers must complete the program and remain with CPS for at least two years. The spring class, starting in May, will be the first to qualify for the incentive.
Addressing Staffing Challenges
The incentive aims to make CPS more competitive in a national recruitment environment strained by staffing shortages. Chief Katie McLellan emphasized in December that maintaining a healthy membership is critical for effective deployment and investigations. A September 2025 police commission report revealed that 19% of CPS officers were on leave or reassigned, often due to mental or physical injuries.
Recruitment Trends
While CPS noted increased interest in the DEO program since the incentive was introduced, officials attribute recruitment activity to multiple factors, including seasonal trends and broader marketing efforts. The selection process for the fall class is underway, with applications open until July 31.
