Boebert's Airport Assertion Contradicted by Facts
Representative Lauren Boebert, a Republican from Colorado, attempted to endorse President Donald Trump's decision to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at airports nationwide to alleviate Transportation Security Administration lines. However, her effort was marred by a significant factual inaccuracy that quickly drew scrutiny.
An Attempt at Reconciliation Goes Awry
Boebert, who has previously expressed disagreements with the president over issues such as the Epstein files and a proposed $200 billion budget increase for the war in Iran, seemed eager to mend fences with Trump. In a video posted on social media platform X on Monday, she highlighted what she believed was a successful outcome at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
"So President Trump sends ICE agents to the airports across the country and while the rest of our country has 3-plus hour waits ― thanks, Democrats ― Minneapolis airport TSA wait time right now is less than 5 minutes," Boebert stated with a laugh. "Called it!" she added confidently.
The Embarrassing Error Unfolds
To compound the situation, Boebert wrote in her post, "You can't make this stuff up." Yet, it appears she inadvertently did just that. According to local news reports cited in a community note on the platform, ICE agents had not yet arrived at MSP Airport at the time of her claim.
An airport spokesperson clarified to the Daily Beast that there was "no awareness of any planned changes for security checkpoint staffing at MSP at this time." Instead, the spokesperson attributed the short wait times to "the commitment of the local TSA team," emphasizing their dedication and efficiency.
Context of Airport Delays and ICE Deployment
The backdrop to this incident involves ongoing delays at airports across the United States, stemming from a funding dispute over Homeland Security that has left TSA workers temporarily unpaid. This financial uncertainty has led thousands of security personnel to call in sick, resulting in extended wait times for travelers.
In response, President Trump has dispatched ICE agents to more than a dozen airports, though the effectiveness of this measure has been questioned by critics and experts alike. The deployment aims to address staffing shortages, but its impact remains under evaluation.
HuffPost has reached out to Boebert's office for comment on the discrepancy, but as of now, no response has been provided. This episode highlights the importance of verifying information before making public statements, especially in the politically charged atmosphere surrounding immigration and security policies.
