Armenian Ambassador to Canada Anahit Harutyunyan praised Canada's role in supporting peace and stability, even as some groups accuse former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney of dialing down the country's peace push. In an exclusive interview at the embassy in Ottawa, Harutyunyan highlighted the strong bilateral ties and Canada's consistent support for Armenia.
Ambassador's Remarks
Harutyunyan emphasized Canada's commitment to international law and human rights, noting that Ottawa has been a reliable partner in promoting peace in the South Caucasus region. She expressed gratitude for Canada's humanitarian aid and political backing, particularly in the context of ongoing tensions.
Criticism of Carney
However, some advocacy groups have accused Mark Carney, the Liberal Party leader and former central banker, of reducing Canada's engagement in peace initiatives. They claim that Carney's focus on economic issues has come at the expense of diplomatic efforts in conflict zones like Nagorno-Karabakh. The ambassador did not directly comment on Carney but reiterated the importance of continued international involvement.
Canada has historically played a mediating role in the region, but recent policy shifts have raised concerns among diaspora communities. The Armenian National Committee of Canada has called for stronger action, including sanctions against Azerbaijan and increased support for Artsakh.
Bilateral Relations
Despite the criticism, Harutyunyan underscored the positive trajectory of Canada-Armenia relations. She noted growing trade, cultural exchanges, and the presence of a vibrant Armenian community in Canada. The ambassador also praised Canada's multicultural policies and its stance on genocide recognition.
The interview comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and a volatile security situation in the Caucasus. Canada's foreign policy under Carney remains a subject of debate, with some praising his economic pragmatism and others calling for a more robust diplomatic stance.
