Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday criticized the troubled renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a $14 million project under President Donald Trump that has been plagued by algae and peeling paint.
AOC Blames Anti-Science Agenda
Asked by the MeidasTouch Network for her take on the fallout, Ocasio-Cortez suggested the problems were predictable given the White House's anti-science agenda. “I mean, when you defund science research, when you don’t really understand the first thing about science, yeah, they talked a bunch of smack,” she said.
'They Turned It Into an Actual Swamp'
Ocasio-Cortez then zinged: “They said they had to repaint the pool and now they’ve turned the place into a swamp. They turned it into an actual swamp.” The remark referenced Trump's repeated campaign promise to “drain the swamp” in Washington, D.C.
The renovation, completed in 2021, has faced ongoing issues with algae growth and peeling paint, leading to criticism from lawmakers and the public. The National Park Service has acknowledged the problems and is working on repairs.
