Maine Candidate Platner Grilled Over Past Controversial Remarks

Maine Senate Candidate Faces Intense Scrutiny Over Past Inflammatory Remarks

Democratic candidate Graham Platner, who recently secured a high-profile endorsement from Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts in his bid for the U.S. Senate seat in Maine, found himself under the harsh spotlight during a CNN interview. The segment, which aired on "Inside Politics Sunday," featured host Manu Raju confronting Platner about past comments that have resurfaced in attack ads from his political opponents.

Confrontation Over Past Reddit Posts

Raju played a clip of himself reminding Platner of what he described as "bad" and "terrible" remarks the candidate made about rape in 2013 Reddit entries. In those previously uncovered posts, Platner wrote, "How about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not get so fucked up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to?"

While Warren has publicly noted that Platner has apologized for these statements, Raju pressed the candidate on their potential political damage. "I wonder, though, if you think how damaging this thing might be politically, because, you know, I read those posts and, you know, they’re bad. Those posts are terrible," Raju stated during the interview.

Candidate's Response and Defense

Platner responded by emphasizing that he has addressed these issues extensively across Maine. "I’ve gone all over the state of Maine and allowed people to ask me about it all directly for months now," he explained. "And it is, I think for a lot of folks in the state, to see this get kind of dragged back up months and months after we’d already talked about it — I will just say, the feedback we have received statewide is that people find all of this to be everything they hate about politics."

The candidate, whose substantial lead in primary polling appears to be narrowing against second-place contender Governor Janet Mills, asserted that he has undergone significant personal transformation. "I actually think a lot of folks can identify with [that]," Platner remarked, referring to his evolution over time.

Expressing Regret and Providing Context

When Raju directly asked, "So you regret those posts?" Platner responded unequivocally, "Of course. I mean, I’ve said, I don’t know how many [times], yes, deeply." He provided context for his past behavior, attributing it to a difficult period following his return from combat deployments. "I was at a time in my life where I was really struggling after I’d come back from my combat deployments. I was very isolated, very alone, very disillusioned, very angry. And I think, like a lot of people, I went on the internet to find some form of community or serotonin boost." Platner added that reconnecting with his community helped him become the person he is today.

High Stakes in the Senate Race

The political stakes are exceptionally high in this election, as Democrats view it as a crucial opportunity to gain ground in their efforts to retake control of the Senate. Moderate Republican Senator Susan Collins is seeking a sixth term and is considered vulnerable by many political analysts. However, Platner's candidacy has become a source of concern for some Democrats, who are treating it cautiously as the June primary approaches.

Additional Controversies Surface

Beyond the Reddit posts, Platner carries additional political baggage that could impact his campaign. According to an October report in the Bangor Daily News, the former bartender turned oyster farmer made other inflammatory statements on social media. These included asserting that the stereotype of Black people not tipping is "solid" and claiming that "an armed working class is a requirement for economic justice."

Furthermore, Platner has faced questions about an alleged Nazi tattoo on his chest that he subsequently had covered. The candidate has denied any knowledge of the tattoo's connection to the Third Reich, but the issue adds another layer of controversy to his campaign as he seeks to unseat an incumbent senator in a closely watched race.
