Elan Harper Secures Conservative Nomination for Calgary Confederation Riding
Elan Harper, the sister-in-law of former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, has officially won the Conservative Party of Canada nomination for the Calgary Confederation electoral district. The nomination contest concluded on Sunday afternoon at the Dalhousie Community Centre, where Harper emerged victorious over fellow contender Kelly Hopper.
Political Background and Professional Experience
Harper brings significant political experience to her candidacy, having previously served on Parliament Hill for then-MP Stephen Harper and current Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. She also worked as a campaign manager in the Calgary Skyview riding, demonstrating her deep involvement in Conservative Party operations.
In her professional capacity, Harper serves as the business tax director for Andersen in Canada's Calgary office. Her credentials extend to corporate governance, where she has served on the board of a $2-billion Crown corporation, chairing both the audit and finance committee and the governance committee.
Campaign Platform and Political Vision
In her campaign announcement last month, Harper articulated her motivation for seeking the nomination, stating: "I'm running because I believe Canada deserves a better government than the one they have. I believe deeply in the promise of a prosperous Canada, not just for today, but for the next generation, and achieving that promise requires disciplined fiscal leadership and serious, principled governance."
Following her nomination victory, Harper released a statement on Tuesday expressing her pride as an Albertan and her honor in representing the Conservative Party. She criticized the current Liberal government, saying: "The hardworking people of this riding are fed up with fancy Liberal rhetoric, broken promises, and a lack of real action. The Carney Liberals now claim they will boost oil production and lower costs, but after years of anti-development policies, Canadians know better."
Upcoming Electoral Challenge
Harper is now positioned to challenge incumbent Liberal MP Corey Hogan in the next federal election. She has been particularly critical of Hogan's representation, asserting: "Instead of standing up for our local economy, Liberal MP Corey Hogan continues to stand in the way, blocking powerful paycheques for our people right here at home."
The candidate emphasized her vision for Alberta's economic future, stating: "Now is the time for a federal government that gets out of the way and allows Alberta's economy to grow. A government that unlocks our full potential, supports our industries, and brings Canadians together around a shared vision of strength and prosperity."
Harper concluded by aligning herself with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's agenda: "Under Pierre Poilievre's leadership, Conservatives will continue to fight the cost-of-living crisis, restore economic growth, and make life affordable for families in Calgary Confederation and across Canada."
Harper lives in the Calgary Confederation riding with her husband and two daughters, having announced her intention to seek the nomination in the same constituency where she resides.
