The campaign seeks the Commonwealth's highest military honour for the late Jess Larochelle, a North Bay soldier whose incredible bravery under fire in Afghanistan saved countless lives.
The Battle That Defined a Hero
In 2006, during one of the most intense firefights of the Afghanistan conflict, Larochelle found himself facing overwhelming odds. With his unit pinned down and vulnerable, the soldier single-handedly engaged approximately 40 Taliban fighters in a desperate defense of his position. Despite being severely outnumbered and under constant enemy fire, Larochelle's determined resistance prevented what could have been a catastrophic loss of life among his fellow soldiers.
Military historians and veterans' advocates describe the engagement as one of the most remarkable displays of individual courage in recent Canadian military history. Larochelle's actions during that critical battle have become legendary within military circles, though formal recognition at the highest level has remained elusive until now.
