Toronto police have charged a woman after she allegedly pushed a senior to the ground and uttered anti-East Asian slurs during an incident in the city's downtown core. The attack occurred on the afternoon of June 22, 2026, near the intersection of Yonge and Dundas Streets, a busy commercial area.
Details of the incident
According to police, the suspect approached the 78-year-old victim, who was walking alone, and began shouting offensive remarks about East Asian people. The woman then shoved the senior, causing them to fall and sustain minor injuries. Bystanders intervened and called 911, and officers arrested the suspect at the scene.
Charges laid
The accused, identified as 34-year-old Toronto resident Maria Santos, faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats. She was held for a bail hearing on June 23. Police have not ruled out additional hate crime charges, as the investigation continues. “We are treating this as a potential hate-motivated offense,” said Constable David Hopkinson of the Toronto Police Service. “Targeting someone because of their ethnicity is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Community response
The incident has drawn condemnation from community leaders and anti-racism advocates. The Chinese Canadian National Council called for a thorough investigation and stronger measures to combat anti-Asian racism. “We are deeply troubled by yet another attack on an East Asian senior,” said spokesperson Lily Chen. “This pattern of violence must end.”
Data from Toronto Police shows that hate crimes targeting East Asian communities rose by 25% in 2025 compared to the previous year, with 120 reported incidents. Advocates say underreporting remains a concern.
Victim's condition
The victim was treated at a local hospital for bruising and released. They are receiving support from victim services. Police urge anyone with information or additional witnesses to come forward.
