Crews began the recovery of a 300-ton crane and its operator from the Wapiti River on July 7, three weeks after the fatal crash off the Wapiti Bridge. The crane, owned by J.D.A. Ventures Ltd., plummeted 50 feet into the river on June 16, killing the operator.
Recovery Operations Underway
The retrieval started on Tuesday morning with heavy equipment, including earth movers, operators, and planners, moving into a staging area on the river's south side. Traffic was rerouted and roads blocked to secure the work area. Clairmont RCMP issued a statement asking the public to avoid the area and expect delays.
“They are asking boats to stay away from that area, as well as drones, as it can impede the recovery process,” the RCMP stated.
Delays Due to Weather
Efforts to retrieve the body were initially hampered by rain and river turbulence. The region experienced over 77 mm of rain around the time of the incident, raising water levels and increasing flow speeds. Recovery plans were delayed until conditions were deemed safe.
When emergency crews first responded, the crane was mostly submerged, with only one tire visible. M.D. of Greenview Fire Department rescuers, assisted by responders from other municipalities, searched the water's surface and nearby shores. A helicopter was also used for aerial search.
Investigation Ongoing
Canada's Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the cause of the crash. Witnesses confirmed they did not see anyone surface. Responders remained on scene late into the night.
J.D.A. Ventures’ employees and owner Jarvis Dawson arrived shortly after the incident. The company issued a social media post on June 20, expressing deep sorrow and setting up a fee-free donation account for the family.
“It is with deep sorrow that we share that our JDA family has experienced a profound loss. Our hearts go out to G’s wife, children, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
Social media users shared their grief. Linda Fersch wrote, “This is one of those days that stops you in your tracks. As a mom of a crane operator, hearing the news left me with a heavy heart.”
Weather Forecast
Varying amounts of rain are forecasted through the week until July 11, which may affect ongoing recovery efforts.
