The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has concluded that there is no link between the Indian government and the 2023 killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The announcement, made following a major gang bust, has elicited a range of reactions from the Sikh community in Canada.
RCMP Investigation Findings
According to the RCMP, the investigation into Nijjar's death involved extensive forensic analysis, witness interviews, and intelligence gathering. The police force stated that the evidence points solely to criminal gang activity, with no involvement by foreign state actors. “We have found no credible evidence linking the Indian government to this tragic incident,” said an RCMP spokesperson.
The gang bust, which led to several arrests, uncovered a network of organized crime operating in British Columbia. Authorities seized weapons, drugs, and cash, and charged multiple individuals with conspiracy to commit murder. The operation was part of a broader crackdown on gang violence in the region.
Sikh Community Response
The Sikh community in Canada has reacted with a mix of relief and skepticism. Some community leaders expressed satisfaction that the investigation cleared the Indian government, hoping it would reduce tensions. “We welcome the RCMP’s findings and hope this brings closure to the family,” said a representative from the World Sikh Organization of Canada.
However, others remain doubtful, citing previous allegations and geopolitical tensions. “Many in the community still believe there was foreign involvement,” said an activist from the Sikh Federation. “We need more transparency from the RCMP.”
Nijjar, a vocal advocate for a separate Sikh state, was shot and killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., in June 2023. His death sparked protests and diplomatic strains between Canada and India, with Canadian officials initially suggesting possible Indian involvement.
Impact on Canada-India Relations
The RCMP’s statement could ease diplomatic tensions between Ottawa and New Delhi. India had denied any role in Nijjar’s death and criticized Canadian allegations. The Canadian government has not issued an official response to the RCMP’s findings, but analysts expect a cautious approach to rebuild trust.
“This development may help de-escalate the rhetoric,” said a foreign policy expert at the University of Toronto. “But underlying issues regarding Sikh separatism and human rights will remain.”
The RCMP continues to investigate the gang network, with further arrests anticipated. The Nijjar family has been informed of the findings and has requested privacy.
