Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre is not giving up. In a one-on-one interview, he vowed to keep fighting and exposing Prime Minister Mark Carney as a fake, despite Carney's Liberal majority government and high approval ratings.
Poilievre Refuses to Back Down
Poilievre compared himself to a boxer who needs to be knocked out, insisting he is not throwing in the towel. He stated that the people who inspired hope in him still have the same problems and are counting on him to fight for them. “They are still counting on me to be their fighter and I’m still going to keep fighting for them,” Poilievre said.
When asked how he can break through the public's positive perception of Carney, Poilievre acknowledged it is a good question. He argued that the key is to “hasten the collision of the reality with the illusion,” asserting that “everything about Mark Carney is an illusion. Everything.”
Carney's Image vs. Reality
Poilievre addressed Conservatives, including those in Calgary's white-collar circles, who view Carney as a conservative. “I think he looks temperamentally and visually like someone you might imagine would be a conservative,” Poilievre said, but then listed Carney's spending, taxing, soft approach to crime, and woke policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion as evidence to the contrary.
Poilievre contrasted former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he described as “style over substance,” with Carney, whom he called “the style of substance.” He criticized Carney's sophisticated hand gestures, corporate buzzwords, and calm speaking style as a shtick.
Connecting Personal Realities
Poilievre emphasized the need to connect people's personal realities with what he called the liberal media's false illusions of Carney. “What is life like for you, Mr. and Mrs. Jones? What is happening in your life that's actually better today than it was a year ago?” he asked. He said his goal is to “get rid of all the illusions and focus on the substance and the reality people will experience.”
Poilievre also questioned Carney's credibility on energy policy, noting that Carney was “the intellectual godfather of the phase out of oil and gas” and now claims carbon is no longer a threat. “How can you believe anything he says when he carries out that kind of reversal in such a short time?” Poilievre asked.
