The 25-year-old man who opened fire in a Montreal grocery store on Tuesday left behind a manifesto filled with violent rhetoric targeting women, police, and other groups, according to police sources. The suspect, identified as a resident of Lethbridge, Alberta, was fatally shot by police after the rampage that killed one person and injured several others.
Manifesto Details
Police confirmed the existence of the manifesto but have not released its full contents. Sources familiar with the document say it includes misogynistic language and threats against law enforcement. The shooter had no prior criminal record, but investigators are examining his social media activity for further clues.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher stated, "This was a targeted attack driven by hate. We are analyzing the manifesto to understand the motive fully."
Victim Identified
The deceased victim has been identified as 48-year-old father of two, Jean-Luc Tremblay, who was shopping at the time of the attack. Tremblay's family described him as a devoted father and friend. "He was the kindest person you could meet," his sister said in a statement.
Three other victims remain hospitalized, two in critical condition. The injured include a 34-year-old woman and two men, ages 29 and 52.
Police Response
Officers arrived within minutes of the first 911 call. Body camera footage shows the suspect exchanging gunfire with police before being neutralized. One officer sustained minor injuries.
Premier François Legault condemned the attack, saying, "These actions have no place in our society. We stand with the victims and their families."
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are investigating whether the shooter acted alone. Lethbridge police assisted in searching the suspect's residence, but have not confirmed a connection. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are also involved, analyzing digital evidence.
