Kane Carter, 29, has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 17 years for the second-degree murder of 15-year-old Alfred Wong, a bystander killed in Vancouver in January 2018. The sentence was handed down on Thursday, July 9, 2026, according to the B.C. Prosecution Service.
Details of the Sentencing
The court also imposed a mandatory lifetime firearms prohibition, a DNA order, and a $200 victim fine surcharge. Carter was found guilty by a jury in December of two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of gangster Kevin Whiteside and Alfred Wong.
The shooting occurred on the night of Jan. 13, 2018, when Whiteside was running along Broadway shooting at two people in a taxi. Court heard that the target was a gangster associated with Carter. Whiteside was hit by gunfire and died at the scene.
The Tragic Death of Alfred Wong
Alfred Wong, a student at Pinetree Secondary in Coquitlam, was in the back seat of his parents' car when a stray bullet struck him in the chest. The family was returning home after dinner. His parents, Samson and Chelly Wong, have been vocal about their loss throughout the legal proceedings.
Prosecutors linked Carter to the slayings through video evidence, cellphone records, and Carter's DNA found in a getaway vehicle. A red van connected to Carter was seen leaving the area after the shooting and was later discovered in a parkade of a Surrey building where Carter rented an apartment.
Retrial and Conviction
The conviction came during a retrial after a previous jury could not reach a decision following five days of deliberation in September 2024. The prosecution's case had collapsed at that time, leading to the retrial.
According to the B.C. Prosecution Service, Carter will serve life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 17 years. The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the impact on the victim's family and community.
