One Dead After Alleged Impaired Driving Collision
A Red Deer resident is dead after what police are calling a preventable crash involving an alleged impaired driver. The collision occurred late Saturday evening on Highway 2 near Red Deer, Alberta.
RCMP say a northbound vehicle crossed the centre line and struck an oncoming car head-on. The driver of the struck vehicle, a 45-year-old Red Deer resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, a 32-year-old man from Calgary, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Alcohol and Speed Suspected
Police allege alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors. The Calgary man has been charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death. He is scheduled to appear in court in Red Deer on July 15, 2026.
"This tragic loss of life was completely preventable," said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff of the Red Deer RCMP. "Impaired driving continues to be a devastating choice that ruins lives."
Community Reaction
The victim's family has requested privacy as they grieve. Friends have set up a roadside memorial near the crash site. Red Deer Mayor Ken Johnston expressed condolences, saying the city stands with the family.
According to Alberta Transportation, impaired driving fatalities have decreased 18% since 2020, but still account for nearly 25% of all traffic deaths in the province. Police are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact Red Deer RCMP.
