The Jewish Security Network has issued a stark warning to Greater Toronto's Jewish community, urging members to exercise increased caution and remain alert as Israel and the United States continue military operations against Iran. This advisory comes in response to escalating global tensions and specific threats targeting Jewish interests worldwide.
Security Agency Issues Precautions
In a statement released on Friday, the security agency launched by the United Jewish Appeal emphasized that Iran and its proxies have historically targeted Jewish and Israeli interests outside the Middle East. "For this reason, it is important that communities remain alert and take sensible precautions," the agency wrote.
The Jewish Security Network recommended several specific security measures for community members:
- Maintain heightened awareness in public spaces
- Refuse entry to buildings from unknown individuals
- Exercise particular attentiveness when arriving at or leaving Jewish institutions or events
Global Security Concerns Echoed
This message aligns with concerns raised earlier this week by Israel's national security services, which advised exercising "increased caution in all destinations around the world." The Israeli National Security Council noted that since the start of Operation Roaring Lion, there has been an identified surge in motivation and an increase in terrorist activity from Iranian security agencies against Israeli and Jewish targets globally.
The NSC alert referenced recent Iranian attacks against other Middle Eastern countries including Bahrain, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, adding that "several attempts to carry out terrorist attacks against Israelis have been thwarted and disrupted."
Recent Incidents Highlight Dangers
The security concerns have been underscored by recent violent incidents, including a shooting at Temple Emanu-El synagogue in Toronto on Monday night following a Purim celebration. Although no injuries were reported, the synagogue doors were littered with bullet holes and broken glass, serving as a tangible reminder of the threats facing Jewish communities.
The Jewish Security Network emphasized that this incident should "serve as a reminder that the environment we operate in requires continued vigilance." Michael Levitt, president of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies, commented on social media following the attack: "For months, the warning signs have been there. The threats. The normalization. The excuses. When antisemitism is tolerated or minimized, it escalates. It always does."
Specific Security Recommendations
The Israeli National Security Council provided detailed guidance for nationals abroad, including:
- Avoid sharing personal information in real time
- Avoid flights through the United Arab Emirates
- Conceal Jewish and Israeli identifiers in public spaces
- Avoid visiting sites identified as Jewish or Israeli, such as Chabad houses or synagogues
The council also flagged an increased threat from "lone-wolf attackers" in recent days, referencing incidents in Austin, Texas, and Toronto. A UJA official directed inquiries to Friday's security statement, indicating no further comment on the situation was forthcoming at this time.
