Mother Found Dead in Buckhead Townhouse

Nateal Campbell, 71, the mother of Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell, was found unresponsive inside her townhouse in Atlanta's upscale Buckhead neighborhood on Wednesday. Police were called by a concerned family member requesting a welfare check, according to WSB.

Her son, Ciarre Campbell, 41, has been charged with her murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife, according to Fulton County Jail records.

Family Statement and Arrest

The Campbell family released a statement through ESPN's NFL insider Ian Rapoport: "We are devastated to share that the Campbell family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family."

Police said a man, later identified as Ciarre, had barricaded himself inside the home and was detained. Search warrants were obtained for the home, clothing, and DNA, according to defense attorney Jay Abt.

Previous Police Calls and Mental Health Issues

Officers had previously been called to the home for a possible mental-health issue. Lt. Christopher Butler told WSB: "A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location, a possible arson incident. There have been some indications of possibly some mental-health issues with an individual." It remains unclear if Ciarre lived with his mother at the time of the alleged murder.

Abt stated: "We vigorously protest his innocence. We look forward to his day in court."

Calais Campbell's NFL Career and Foundation

Calais Campbell, 39, is a six-time Pro Bowler who began his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. He has also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Miami Dolphins before returning to Baltimore on a one-year, $5.5-million contract in April 2026. He is set to play his 19th season.

The Ravens said in a statement: "We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time. We ask that everyone please respect their privacy while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss." The Cardinals also expressed support: "At this time of unfathomable tragedy, our hearts are with Calais Campbell and his family."

Campbell was named the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for founding the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation with his mother and seven siblings, named after his late father, which enhances the community through teaching critical life skills to young people. He has 117 career sacks in 278 games, including 259 starts.

Ciarre Campbell, a former Colorado State football player, is the older brother of Calais.
