The spirit of community giving shone brightly across British Columbia's Fraser Valley as local real estate professionals wrapped up the 31st annual REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive. This longstanding initiative once again mobilized generosity, resulting in the collection of more than 900 bags filled with blankets, coats, and other warm winter clothing.
A Legacy of Community Support
Now in its fourth decade, the blanket drive remains a cornerstone of local philanthropy. Volunteers from the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB), representing communities from Abbotsford to North Delta, dedicated their time and effort to collect, sort, and deliver these essential items. Their work is estimated to provide comfort and support to approximately 9,000 individuals facing the challenges of the cold season.
"Every blanket, coat, and warm item donated through the REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive meets an immediate and essential need in our community," said Adam Beardwood, Director at Cyrus Centre Abbotsford. He emphasized that the donations enable organizations like his to extend care and compassion, making a tangible difference for those relying on community support.
"Warmth That Lasts": More Than Just Material Donations
This year's campaign, themed "Warmth That Lasts," highlighted the profound impact of each donation. Beyond physical warmth, each item represents dignity, comfort, and a powerful message to vulnerable residents that they are seen and cared for by their neighbours.
Janet Brown, Director of Communications at Surrey Urban Mission, echoed this sentiment. "The REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive continues to make a meaningful impact on the people we serve," Brown stated. "Every donated item we receive helps individuals stay safe through the cold months... This is the warmth that lasts; a sense of being seen, supported, and valued during life’s most difficult moments."
Addressing Growing Need Through Collective Action
The drive underscored the power of community networks. Brokerages throughout the region acted as collection hubs, gathering donations from clients, local residents, and partner organizations. In a year marked by economic pressures, the initiative addressed a critical and growing need.
"In a year when many families are feeling the strain of rising costs, the need in our communities has never been greater," noted Tore Jacobsen, Chair of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board. "I’m incredibly proud of our members, who continue to show up with generosity, empathy, and service. Their dedication makes a real and lasting difference for thousands of people across the Fraser Valley."
The FVREB, which represents over 5,000 real estate professionals in Abbotsford, Langley, Mission, North Delta, Surrey, and White Rock, extended its gratitude to all donors, volunteers, and participating brokerages. Their collective effort ensures that vulnerable individuals and families receive not only essential winter items but also a crucial measure of kindness to face the season ahead.
