A Florida man has been arrested after allegedly starving his puppy to death and hiding her in a locked garage, according to the local sheriff's office. The 4-month-old Bluetick Coonhound/Australian Shepherd mix, named Bella, was found dead in a garage after neighbors reported a foul odor.
Sheriff's Investigation Reveals Cruelty
The sheriff's office stated that a veterinarian determined Bella had no pre-existing medical condition that would explain her severe malnourishment. The dog's owner, identified as 34-year-old John Smith, faces charges of aggravated animal cruelty. He was taken into custody on July 7, 2026.
Deputies responded to a call about a possible animal neglect at Smith's residence in Ocala, Florida. Upon arrival, they discovered Bella's body in a locked garage, with no food or water available. The puppy weighed only 8 pounds, half of what a healthy dog her age should weigh.
Community Outrage and Legal Proceedings
Animal rights advocates have expressed outrage over the incident. Dr. Emily White, a veterinarian who examined Bella, said, “This was a slow, painful death. There is no excuse for such neglect.” Smith is being held at Marion County Jail on a $10,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 15.
The sheriff's office urges pet owners to seek help if they cannot care for their animals. “There are resources available. No animal should suffer like this,” said Sheriff Billy Woods.
