A seemingly joyous occasion at a Catholic school in Toledo, Ohio, descended into chaos when a disagreement over seating at a kindergarten graduation ceremony escalated into a physical altercation among adults. The incident, which occurred at Queen of Apostles School, left one woman hospitalized and another facing felony assault charges.
Altercation Details
According to reports from ABC affiliate WTVG, Jessica Anderson, 28, allegedly began yelling at other parents who were attempting to occupy seats she was saving. Parent Craig Mays told the outlet that he tried to calm Anderson down, but moments later, five of her male family members attacked him. Mays stated, "As I'm arguing with Jessica, I literally don't remember anything, I just know I was sucker-punched."
Video footage obtained by the outlet shows a man lying on the ground while being punched by multiple individuals as others attempted to intervene and break up the attack. The brawl continued for several minutes before police arrived on the scene.
Injuries and Arrest
Mays' former partner tried to intervene during the fight, but Anderson allegedly grabbed her by the hair and dragged her away. According to an affidavit obtained by CBS affiliate WTOL, the victim's face was slammed into a metal chair, resulting in injuries that required stitches. She was subsequently hospitalized. Police arrested Anderson, who now faces a felony assault charge.
School Response
A spokesperson for Central City Ministries, which operates the school, confirmed that no students were present in the room during the altercation. The graduation ceremony was postponed, and school administrators are working to reschedule the event. Mays, who works as a kindergarten teacher at another school, expressed his disappointment, saying, "I know how hard those kids work, I know how hard those teachers work, for us to ruin it and be selfish like that, it literally breaks my heart that I can't watch my daughter graduate today."
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many questioning the behavior of the adults involved. Authorities continue to investigate the matter, and further charges may be pending.
