While trending baby names like Truce and Marjorie capture headlines, a quieter phenomenon is unfolding: numerous names are steadily disappearing from birth certificates, daycare rosters, and everyday conversation. Each year, the parenting website BabyCenter publishes a report identifying baby names at risk of "going extinct." Their latest data reveals surprising declines, including place names like London and Dallas, and boy names ending in -y, such as Grady and Corey.

Unexpected Drops and Fading Trends

"I didn't expect to see boy names that end in -y drop so much in popularity ― especially a name like Harry, which has that nickname-as-a-full name charm that's popular right now," said Rebekah Wahlberg, a baby name trends specialist at BabyCenter, in an interview. Huxley and Rey also made the list of rapidly declining names.

Other trends are more anticipated, such as the fall of nontraditional spellings. Names like Charleigh, Kori, Everlee, Alivia, Maddison, and Emmitt are seeing steep declines. "It doesn't surprise me that unique spellings are falling out of style," Wahlberg noted. "They've been the target of a lot of online commentary lately ― plus, having a uniquely spelled name can come with complications. Parents today are thinking about that when deciding how to spell their babies' names."

The data reflects the names with the sharpest year-over-year decline among the top 1,000 baby names submitted by BabyCenter users who welcomed babies in 2025.

Additional Declining Trends: D and K Names

Another trend highlighted in the report is the fall of names beginning with D and K. For girls, this includes Danielle, Dylan, Kenna, and Kinley, while for boys, Dominic, Dev, Kylian, and Karim are declining. BabyCenter's report emphasizes that these names are dropping so quickly they might be at risk of extinction.

Timeless Names That Endure

In contrast, many names are standing the test of time. BabyCenter also released a report on timeless names that have held a spot in the top 50 for over two decades. "The longevity of some of these names at the top is really neat to see," Wahlberg said. "Take Sophia, for example ― it was our number one name for more than a decade, and is still in the top three today."

Other timeless picks include William, Emma, Noah, Matthew, Luke, Isabella, Benjamin, and Jack. "It doesn't surprise me that many of our timeless names are rooted in ancient cultures or biblical texts," Wahlberg added. "Parents are drawn to these names' rich history and deep meanings. It's also common to carry on family traditions through names."
