Thousands of residents in Muskoka and central Ontario are experiencing widespread power outages following severe storms that swept through the region. The outages, which began late Thursday evening, have left many households and businesses without electricity as utility crews scramble to restore service.
Extent of the Outages
According to local utility companies, the storms caused significant damage to power lines and infrastructure, resulting in blackouts affecting over 10,000 customers in areas including Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, and Huntsville. The outages have disrupted daily life, with reports of traffic lights out, businesses closed, and residents relying on backup generators.
Utility Response
Hydro One and other providers have dispatched crews to assess damage and begin repairs. In a statement, a Hydro One spokesperson said, 'Our teams are working around the clock to restore power safely and as quickly as possible. We anticipate that most customers will have power restored within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the severity of the damage.' Residents are advised to stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
Community Impact
The outages have also raised concerns about food spoilage and access to medical equipment for those reliant on electricity. Local emergency shelters have been opened to provide warmth and charging stations. 'We are doing everything we can to support our community during this difficult time,' said a Muskoka district official. 'We urge residents to check on vulnerable neighbors and conserve battery power.'
Weather forecasts indicate that conditions are expected to improve, but further storms could delay restoration efforts. Authorities recommend that residents prepare emergency kits and stay updated through official channels.
