Whether you are embarking on a comprehensive home renovation or simply upgrading your household appliances, the process can often feel overwhelming. Knowing where to begin is crucial for making informed decisions that align with your space, family dynamics, and financial plan.
Start with Design and Layout
According to Oliver Brown, owner of Rusch Design Build, the optimal time to evaluate your appliances is during the initial design phase of a renovation. Adjusting designs later to accommodate new appliances can be both difficult and costly. "The design of the kitchen will be centred around either the existing appliances or new appliances," he explains. "One of the first things we look at is the floor plan, what the appliances are going to be and the design triangle, which includes the fridge, sink and stove."
Consider Your Layout Carefully
Once you delve into the layout and elevations, specific appliance choices will significantly impact your counter space and cabinetry. "Knowing whether you want a 35-inch fridge or a 40-inch fridge will affect your counter space and cabinetry," says Brown. The same principle applies when deciding between a wall oven and a range. "If you want a wall oven and cooktop, your kitchen will need more space. If space is limited, it’s often best to stick with a range, which is generally standard in size."
Lifestyle Matters in Appliance Selection
Your storage needs, cooking habits, and household size should all play a pivotal role in your appliance decisions. For instance, counter-depth refrigerators offer a sleek, streamlined appearance but provide less storage capacity. "If you’re going from a 36-inch-wide fridge to a counter-depth model, you’re losing quite a bit of fridge and freezer space," Brown notes. "If it’s a priority and you have the room, consider going wider with a 48-inch side-by-side."
When to Repair and When to Replace
Before opting to repair an appliance, it is essential to consider its age. "It can be $500 or $600 just to fix an element on a gas range or a panel on a washer," Brown points out. "Sometimes the repair is more than half the cost of replacing it." Evaluating the cost-effectiveness of repairs versus replacement can save you money and hassle in the long run.
Prioritize Everyday Use
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is overlooking how frequently they use certain appliances. "If you use your microwave a lot, make sure it’s accessible," advises Brown. "Moving it from above the range to below an island means you’re bending down every time." Built-in wall units or microwave drawers often represent a larger initial investment but enhance both functionality and design for years to come.
Get Started at the Home Show
For homeowners beginning the renovation journey, the Calgary Home and Garden Show offers an excellent opportunity to gather ideas, understand timelines, and connect with professionals. "It’s a really good starting point to get ideas, learn about schedules and what kind of budget you should be planning for," says Brown. "Our team will be there, and we’re happy to answer any questions or provide feedback."
