Delhi Guyz Brings Authentic Indian Street Food to Saskatoon's Mount Royal
Vidit Bahal and Ankur Mathur, two entrepreneurs originally from Delhi, India, have successfully launched Delhi Guyz restaurant in Saskatoon's Mount Royal neighborhood. The establishment, which opened its doors in November, aims to deliver the genuine taste of Indian street food that both founders grew up enjoying in their homeland.
A Culinary Dream Realized
Despite both hailing from Delhi, Bahal and Mathur only met four years ago after separately relocating to Saskatoon. Their shared passion for food and cooking quickly forged a strong friendship and a mutual dream: to introduce the vibrant street food culture of Delhi to Saskatoon residents. Each partner brings substantial culinary experience to the venture, making their collaboration both natural and inspired.
"We both love cooking and we both love food," explained Bahal. "It was just an instant realization that we should do something like this. After catering a Christmas party where our food received a standing ovation, we knew it was time to open a business."
Bringing Delhi's Flavors to Saskatchewan
The menu at Delhi Guyz features a wide variety of Indian and Indochinese dishes, with particular emphasis on street food classics. For Bahal and Mathur, this isn't just about business—it's about cultural connection and culinary authenticity.
"Living in Delhi, we had access to street food that was the basic table food of Indian people," Mathur noted. "It's affordable, convenient food that you can enjoy without hesitation. We're constantly working to bring a little piece of India to Saskatoon."
The partners have observed that while Indian food is available in Saskatoon, it often lacks the authentic flavors that the local Indian community remembers from home. "In our Indian community, we talk about how we miss specific street food items," Bahal said. "We're trying to get the Indian taste exactly right here."
More Than Just Curry
One of Delhi Guyz's primary missions is to challenge misconceptions about Indian cuisine. "There has been a significant misunderstanding that Indian food is just about curry," Bahal emphasized. "I just hate that. It's not about curry. There are so many flavors to enjoy, and people often forget about the real flavors from back home."
The restaurant's name reflects both its origins and its philosophy. "It was the idea of two guys from Delhi serving good food with great service," Mathur explained. "Delhi is not only India's capital but also its food capital. With so many multicultural people living there from all over India, you can find everything in Delhi. Now we're bringing that diversity here."
Signature Dishes and Customer Favorites
Among Delhi Guyz's most popular offerings is Dahi Puri, a dish that exemplifies the complex flavor profiles of Indian street food. "Dahi Puri is basically a crispy ball with multiple flavors that pop in your mouth," Bahal described. "It's best enjoyed by putting the whole ball in your mouth so it bursts with all the flavors at once."
The dish features:
- Tangy tamarind flavor
- Sweetness from jaggery
- Spiciness of garlic and onions
- Freshness of mint and coriander
- Crunchy texture of saivai
- Sweet yogurt inside
- Fresh pomegranate topping
"When we want to impress somebody, we bring this out," Mathur added with pride.
A Labor of Love
For the Delhi Guyz founders, this venture represents far more than a business opportunity. "We care about the food we're serving," Bahal stated. "We're not just viewing this from a business perspective of selling, making money, and getting rich quick. We genuinely care. This is our art. This is something that we love and want to do every day."
Mathur echoed this sentiment, emphasizing their long-term vision: "We want to get the great taste of Delhi out there. I've been dreaming about bringing the great flavors of India to Saskatoon, and now we're making that dream a reality."
The opening of Delhi Guyz adds to Saskatoon's growing culinary diversity, offering residents an authentic taste of Indian street food culture while providing the local Indian community with flavors that remind them of home.
