Surrey Driver's High-Speed Bridge Demonstration Ends With Lamborghini Impoundment

A Surrey man's attempt to showcase both his city and his luxury vehicle to visiting relatives has resulted in significant legal and financial consequences after a high-speed incident on the Alex Fraser Bridge.

Dangerous Speed on Delta Bridge

On Wednesday evening just after 8 p.m., highway patrol officers observed a Lamborghini Urus SUV traveling at excessive speeds northbound over the Alex Fraser Bridge in Delta. Using laser technology, police recorded the vehicle moving at 197 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone - nearly triple the legal limit. The 51-year-old driver was immediately stopped, and his vehicle was impounded for seven days under provincial regulations.

Costly Consequences for Dangerous Driving

The driver now faces multiple penalties that will total at least $2,500 in immediate costs, with additional long-term financial impacts. The immediate fines include:

  • $483 for excessive speeding
  • $109 for illegal window tint
  • Towing and impound fees for the seven-day vehicle seizure

Beyond these immediate expenses, the driver must now carry high-risk driver insurance premiums for a minimum of three years, significantly increasing his ongoing transportation costs.

Police Warning About Bridge Enforcement Misconceptions

Corporal Michael McLaughlin of the RCMP emphasized that bridges are not exempt from speed enforcement, despite some drivers' assumptions. "Some drivers seem to think that bridges are free from speed enforcement. That is a foolish and dangerous assumption," McLaughlin stated. "Bridges are no strangers to deadly collisions. Driving over double the speed limit is extremely dangerous to you, your passengers and everyone around you."

Unintended Sightseeing Experience

According to police statements, the driver explained that he was attempting to show his out-of-country cousins the sights of Metro Vancouver. Instead, the visitors witnessed the immediate consequences of dangerous driving, including the vehicle impoundment and the arrival of other family members to collect the driver and his two passengers.

"The driver claimed he was showing his out-of-country cousins the sights of Metro Vancouver," said McLaughlin. "Instead, they saw the consequences of dangerous driving."

This incident serves as a stark reminder that high-performance vehicles require responsible operation, particularly on infrastructure like bridges where excessive speed can have catastrophic consequences for all road users.
