Hexagon Agility Lands Major Mexican Order for Natural Gas Truck Systems
Hexagon Agility, recognized globally as the leading provider of compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems, has announced a significant new order valued at approximately $12 million USD. This substantial contract comes from a prominent Mexican trucking company, marking a pivotal step in the adoption of cleaner heavy-duty transport solutions within the country's vital freight sector.
Expanding a Successful Pilot Program
This latest order builds directly upon a successful year-long pilot program where the fleet rigorously tested heavy-duty natural gas trucks in real-world Mexican operations. The positive results have now paved the way for a scaled rollout of this sustainable technology platform.
The new sleeper trucks will be powered by the Cummins X15N natural gas engine, equipped with Hexagon Agility's ProCab behind-the-cab fuel systems. These systems offer a substantial 175 diesel gallon equivalent capacity, enabling an impressive range of up to 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) on a single fill. This extended range is critical for long-haul routes across Mexico's vast geography, allowing fleets to fully leverage the economic benefits of natural gas without compromising on operational reliability or distance capabilities.
Compelling Economic and Environmental Advantages
The transition from diesel to natural gas delivers powerful dual benefits for fleet operators. Financially, natural gas fuel costs can be up to 50% lower than diesel, representing a massive reduction in the total cost of ownership. Environmentally, the impact is equally significant.
These newly ordered trucks are projected to travel more than 12 million miles annually. Over that distance, the switch to natural gas is expected to achieve remarkable emissions reductions:
- Avoiding up to 2,500 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
- Cutting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by approximately 90%.
Ian MacDonald, Senior Vice President of Sales Americas at Hexagon Agility, commented on the strategic move: "Following a year of proving the new 15-liter engine’s performance in their real-world operations, we are excited to help this major fleet as it scales the rollout of its heavy-duty natural gas truck platform. Despite the unprecedented slowdown in the North American truck market, fleets are choosing to transition to natural gas because the advantages are compelling – lower operating costs, cleaner emissions, and dependable performance that strengthens their competitiveness for the long term."
Transforming Mexico's Trucking Landscape
This order arrives at a crucial juncture for Mexico's transportation industry. The trucking sector is the backbone of domestic commerce, moving over half of the nation's total freight and serving as a vital link in North American supply chains. However, the industry remains overwhelmingly dependent on diesel, with an estimated 98% of trucks using this fuel.
This reliance exposes fleets to volatile diesel prices, import dependencies, and increasing regulatory pressure to curb emissions. The combination of Cummins' powerful X15N engine and Hexagon Agility's advanced fuel systems now provides a practical, heavy-duty alternative. This technological advancement is further supported by Mexico's expanding natural gas pipeline network and growing domestic production, which ensures competitive and stable fuel pricing.
The partnership and this substantial order signal a meaningful shift toward more sustainable and economically resilient freight transport in Mexico, enabling the country to embrace cheaper, cleaner, and scalable solutions for its critical logistics infrastructure.
