Vehicle makers General Motors and Toyota have issued recalls on more than 17,000 vehicles in Canada for potential defective airbag inflators and engine issues, respectively.
Airbag inflator issues in GM vehicles
According to the Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database, General Motors is recalling more than 200 vehicles due to possible faulty side curtain airbag inflators that could suddenly deploy, thus posing an injury risk to drivers and passengers.
“On certain trucks, the side curtain airbag inflators could be defective. As a result, the driver and/or passenger side curtain airbag inflator(s) could deploy without a crash,” the recall notice states, adding that “parts could be propelled toward vehicle occupants” should it happen.
Affected models include: 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, 2019 Chevrolet Silverado HD, 2018 GMC Sierra and 2019 GMC Sierra HD. General Motors will notify affected vehicle owners by mail, instructing them to take their trucks to a dealership to replace both side curtain airbag modules.
Engine issues in Toyota vehicles
Japanese maker Toyota is recalling close to 17,000 vehicles due to engines that may not have been manufactured properly. The recall notice states vehicles could stall while being driven, posing an increased injury risk for those inside. As a result, “metal debris could cause the crankshaft bearings to fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough or may not start,” said the notice.
Affected vehicles with a 3.4L twin-turbo engine include: 2024 Lexus GX 550, 2023 and 2024 Lexus LX 600, and 2023 and 2024 Toyota Tundra. Toyota said it will contact vehicle owners by mail as it’s still working on “corrective actions.”
