A truck crashed into a bridge in Liberty Village early Wednesday morning, bringing eastbound streetcar service on King Street to a halt. Toronto officials report that the suspension could last throughout the day as crews assess damage and work to clear the scene.
Incident Details
The collision occurred around 9 a.m. when a large truck struck the bridge structure. No injuries have been reported, but the impact caused significant damage to the bridge, prompting an immediate shutdown of streetcar operations in the affected area. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has rerouted buses to accommodate commuters, but delays are expected.
Impact on Commuters
Eastbound streetcar service on King Street remains suspended from Dufferin Street to Bathurst Street. Westbound service continues, but with delays. TTC spokesperson Stuart Green said, "We are working closely with city engineers to assess the structural integrity of the bridge. Until we can ensure it is safe, streetcars will not operate on this section."
Commuters are advised to use alternative routes, including the 504 King streetcar detour via Queen Street, or take the subway. The TTC has deployed additional buses to handle the increased passenger load.
Investigation Underway
Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. It is unclear if charges will be laid. The bridge, which carries streetcar tracks over a roadway, has been a point of concern for years due to low clearance warnings. However, this is the first major strike in recent memory.
Long-term Repairs
City engineers are conducting a thorough inspection to determine the extent of the damage. Repairs may require closing the bridge to all traffic for several days. Mayor Olivia Chow stated, "We will do everything possible to minimize disruption, but safety is our top priority. We ask for patience as we work to restore normal service."
The TTC will provide updates throughout the day via its website and social media channels. Commuters are encouraged to check before traveling.
