Saskatchewan-born defenseman Ethan Bear has signed a new contract with the New York Islanders, the team announced Wednesday. The deal comes after Bear spent the previous season with the Vancouver Canucks, where he underwent successful shoulder surgery in March 2023.
Bear's Journey to Long Island
The 27-year-old from Regina, Saskatchewan, was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He played four seasons with the Oilers before being traded to the Canucks in 2021. Bear appeared in 61 games for Vancouver during the 2022-23 season, recording 3 goals and 10 assists before his season was cut short due to injury.
Recovery and Return
Following shoulder surgery, Bear was sidelined for six months. He worked diligently to regain full strength and mobility, eventually returning to the ice for the 2023-24 season. His solid defensive play and physical presence caught the attention of the Islanders, who were looking to bolster their blue line.
Contract Details
While specific financial terms of the contract have not been disclosed, sources indicate it is a one-year, two-way deal worth $775,000 at the NHL level. The contract provides Bear with an opportunity to compete for a roster spot during training camp and potentially earn a more permanent role with the team.
Islanders' Defensive Outlook
The Islanders have a deep defensive corps, but Bear's right-handed shot and experience could prove valuable. He is expected to compete with several other defensemen for the sixth and seventh spots on the depth chart. Head coach Patrick Roy has emphasized the importance of defensive stability, and Bear's physical style fits the team's identity.
Saskatchewan Hockey Pride
Bear remains one of several Saskatchewan-born players making an impact in the NHL. His journey from minor hockey in Regina to the professional ranks serves as an inspiration for young players in the province. The Islanders are scheduled to open their regular season in October, and Bear will look to make a strong impression in training camp.
