A 56-year-old woman died after falling into an uncovered maintenance hole on a busy New York City street, prompting an investigation by police and utility officials.
Incident Details
The woman parked her Mercedes-Benz SUV near the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 52nd Street in Midtown Manhattan on Monday night. Shortly before 11:30 p.m., she fell into the open hole after exiting her vehicle. Police confirmed she was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Investigation Underway
It remains unclear why the maintenance hole was left uncovered. Con Edison, the utility company responsible, stated it is investigating the accident. In a statement, the company expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to the family, emphasizing that safety is its top priority.
Relatives of the victim told WABC-TV they are shocked and saddened by the tragedy and are seeking more information about how it occurred.
Police officers responding to a 911 call found the woman unresponsive at the bottom of the hole. The city's chief medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.
