Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) executed two search warrants at residences in North Spirit Lake First Nation on May 21, resulting in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of a significant quantity of crack cocaine and cash.
Details of the Seizure
During the coordinated operation, officers discovered crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $64,000, along with a substantial amount of Canadian currency. The drugs and cash were confiscated as evidence.
Arrests and Charges
Two suspects, whose identities have not been released pending court appearances, were taken into custody. They face multiple charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, including possession for the purpose of trafficking. NAPS officials stated that the investigation is ongoing and further charges may be laid.
Community Impact
The seizure represents a major blow to drug trafficking in the remote First Nation community, located approximately 400 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout. NAPS has emphasized its commitment to combating the flow of illegal substances into Indigenous communities across the region.
Residents have expressed relief at the police action, as crack cocaine has been linked to increased crime and health issues in the area. NAPS continues to urge anyone with information about drug activity to come forward.
