3 Officers Hospitalized After Fentanyl Exposure at B.C. Prison

Three correctional officers were hospitalized after being exposed to fentanyl at the Pacific Institution federal penitentiary in Abbotsford, British Columbia, the union representing them confirmed on Monday.

Incident Details

The exposure occurred on June 22, 2026, at the medium-security facility. The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN) stated that the officers were exposed to the potent opioid during a routine operation. All three were taken to hospital for treatment and observation.

UCCO Pacific regional president John Randle said the incident underscores ongoing safety risks faced by staff. “Our members are dealing with dangerous substances on a daily basis without adequate protection,” Randle said in a statement.

Union Calls for Action

The union has repeatedly called for better safety measures, including the widespread availability of naloxone and improved training for detecting and handling illicit drugs. Randle noted that fentanyl exposure can cause respiratory distress, dizziness, and even death without immediate intervention.

“This is not an isolated event,” Randle added. “We need the government to prioritize the health and safety of correctional officers.”

Broader Context

The Pacific Institution has faced scrutiny in recent years over drug smuggling and staff safety. In 2024, a report by the Correctional Investigator of Canada highlighted the prevalence of synthetic drugs in federal prisons and the need for enhanced security measures.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) confirmed the incident and said it is reviewing protocols. “The health and safety of our staff is a top priority,” a CSC spokesperson said in an email. “We are working with the union to address concerns.”

The officers are expected to recover fully.
