Top Mosquito Repellents and Bite Relief Products for Summer

Summer brings more time outdoors, but for those attractive to mosquitoes, it means dealing with bites, itching, and infection risk. Daniel Markowski, technical advisor for the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA), explains that mosquitoes are drawn to chemical cues like breath odors and skin microbiota. He states, "We are all different, and these different combinations are more [or] less attractive to different mosquito species." Repellents work as chemical blockers that confuse mosquitoes' antennae. Markowski says, "In my opinion, the single best way to prevent mosquito bites while you're outside... is to wear a personal repellent." Below are expert-recommended products and staff favorites.

DEET-Based Repellent: Off Deep Woods Aerosol

HuffPost's Alexandra Niforos relied on Off Deep Woods aerosol through 13 years of summer camp. This formula uses 25% DEET to fend off mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, and chiggers for up to eight hours. Markowski notes, "DEET is registered with the EPA and endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It is the gold standard." He cautions against concentrations above 30% due to toxicity concerns. Available at Amazon for $7, Target for $7, and Walmart for $8.

Picaridin Mist: Off Clean Feel

HuffPost staff favor Off Clean Feel mist for its efficacy and non-sticky feel. It uses 20% picaridin, a synthetic repellent that Markowski says "has proven to be very effective against a number of mosquito species. It’s also odorless and less likely to irritate your skin." This DEET-free mist offers up to eight hours of protection and is safe for children and pregnant people. Available at Amazon for $13 and Target for $16.

The device creates a 20-foot invisible barrier without DEET or harsh scent, using a fuel cartridge to diffuse repellent. Available at Amazon and Target for $18, Lowe's for $29.

Botanical DEET-Free Spray: Repel Lemon Eucalyptus

Oil of lemon eucalyptus is a natural repellent derived from lemon eucalyptus tree leaves, effective against mosquitoes and ticks. This Repel spray protects for up to six hours, has a refreshing feel, and nearly 42,000 Amazon ratings. Not safe for children under 3. Available at Walmart for $5.

Itch-Easing Pen: After Bite Advanced

The formula contains 5% sodium bicarbonate with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Available in travel-friendly pens: 4-pack at Amazon for $22, 1-pack at Walmart for $5.

Pop-Up Mosquito Net Tent

A physical barrier like a mosquito net is highly effective. This bestselling tent pops open with ultra-fine mesh, two-sided zip entry, and UPF 50+ protection. Available in four sizes starting at $106+ at Amazon.

Larvicide for Standing Water: Mosquito Dunks

Treat standing water with Mosquito Dunks, a non-toxic larvicide that hinders mosquito breeding. The Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control suggests using half or quarter disks. Available at Amazon and Chewy for $9.

Permethrin Spray for Clothing: Sawyer

Markowski explains, "Permethrin isn't so much of a repellent as it is an insecticide. It is meant to be applied to clothing only." This unscented spray bonds to fabric fibers, repelling ticks and 55 other insects for up to six weeks or six washings. Available at Amazon for $18+, Walmart for $15, and REI for $18.

Heated Bite Relief Tool

Senior breaking news reporter Sara Boboltz recommends a heated insect bite healer that breaks down itch-causing compounds. The chemical-free pen works in three to six seconds, reducing redness and swelling. Available at Amazon for $20.
