A recent study has found that reading difficulties are a major obstacle for workers looking to change careers. The research, conducted by the Canadian Literacy and Learning Network, indicates that many adults struggle with reading comprehension, limiting their ability to acquire new skills and adapt to evolving job markets.
Impact on Career Mobility
The study surveyed over 1,000 workers across Canada and found that nearly one in four adults face challenges with reading that affect their career advancement. These difficulties prevent them from completing training programs, understanding job requirements, and passing certification exams.
Call for Better Support
Advocates are urging governments and employers to invest in adult literacy programs. "We need to address this issue to ensure that all workers have equal opportunities to succeed," said Sarah Thompson, director of the network. The report recommends workplace-based literacy training and accessible online resources.
As the economy shifts towards technology and specialized roles, the demand for continuous learning grows. Without adequate support, many workers risk being left behind.
