Two prominent Windsor ophthalmologists have made a significant $200,000 donation to Windsor Regional Hospital, reinforcing their commitment to transforming Essex County into a center for medical innovation and education. This latest contribution elevates the total philanthropic support from Dr. Fouad Tayfour and Dr. Barry Emara to nearly $1 million, underscoring their dedication to advancing healthcare in the community.
Building a Hub for Medical Excellence
During a press conference held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the Windsor Surgical Centre, the doctors emphasized that their focus on research is pivotal for attracting top-tier medical talent to the region. "We've targeted research as our main focus to create a world-class healthcare system here and attract the brightest minds to Windsor," explained Dr. Emara. "New graduates seek out areas where research is active, which draws clinicians, physicians, and surgeons to regions like ours. We're committed to building and promoting this environment."
A Legacy of Innovation and Community Investment
Dr. Tayfour and Dr. Emara, who co-own the Windsor Surgical Centre, established the Taylor-Emara Research and Education Fund in 2022. This initiative aims to foster local innovation and enhance patient care across Windsor and Essex County. "It's a beautiful city with a great community and so many people to help," said Dr. Tayfour. "We want to ensure we attract first-class physicians, practitioners, and researchers. New graduates are eager to engage in research, and that's how our community will flourish."
The donated funds are allocated to support research projects and acquire essential equipment at Windsor Regional Hospital, while also aiding in the recruitment of healthcare professionals to the area. Hospital CEO Kristin Kennedy praised the donation, stating, "A gift of this magnitude is more than a financial transaction. It represents a profound vote of confidence in our organization and its future direction, aligning with our mission for the community. Your selflessness ensures healing for generations to come."
Fostering a Culture of Curiosity and Excellence
Jonathan Foster, the hospital's vice-president of emergency services, trauma, and mental health, highlighted how the donations help cultivate a culture of curiosity and research excellence. The funds address the unique health needs of the local community, supporting studies in diverse areas such as:
- Pediatrics
- Mental health
- Diabetes
- Cancer research
"What makes this so meaningful is that it comes from two individuals who know and are invested in our community," Foster noted. "Dr. Tayfour and Dr. Emara understand our unique needs because they live and serve here every day. They aren't just donors; they're champions for our staff and advocates for our patients."
International Recognition and Medical Pioneering
Both doctors are renowned in international medical circles for their groundbreaking contributions. Dr. Tayfour pioneered cataract surgery in Canada and performed the first LASIK procedure in North America. Dr. Emara was the first ophthalmologist in Ontario to introduce "dropless" cataract surgery, utilizing an injectable medication to minimize the need for post-operative eye drops.
Their ongoing philanthropic efforts, including this latest $200,000 donation, continue to bolster Windsor's reputation as a growing hub for medical education and research, promising long-term benefits for healthcare in the region.
