Two suspects are accused of selling counterfeit licence plates that have been linked to dozens of criminal cases across Ontario, according to police. Peel Regional Police announced the charges on Wednesday, alleging the pair manufactured and distributed fake plates used in various offenses, including theft, fraud, and other crimes.
Investigation Details
The investigation, dubbed Project Plate, began after officers noticed an increase in counterfeit plates being used in criminal activities. Police executed search warrants at two locations in the Greater Toronto Area, seizing equipment used to produce the fake plates, along with a number of completed counterfeit plates. The suspects, whose identities have not been released, face charges of fraud, possession of property obtained by crime, and uttering forged documents.
Impact on Public Safety
Police emphasized that counterfeit plates undermine vehicle registration systems and facilitate criminal behavior. They urged drivers to verify the authenticity of their plates and report any suspicious activity. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as police continue to link the plates to more crimes.
The case highlights the broader issue of document fraud in Ontario, which authorities say is a growing concern. Peel police are working with other law enforcement agencies to track the distribution network and identify any additional suspects.
