The World Health Organization is investigating the possibility of human-to-human transmission of hantavirus after three people died and four others fell ill on a cruise ship. The probe comes as three additional patients with suspected hantavirus were evacuated from another cruise ship, and a new case was confirmed in Switzerland.
The WHO’s investigation focuses on whether the virus, typically spread through rodent droppings, can be transmitted between people in close quarters such as a cruise ship. The cluster of cases has raised alarms among health officials, as hantavirus is usually not contagious among humans.
In a separate incident, three individuals showing symptoms consistent with hantavirus were medically evacuated from a cruise ship. Their condition remains under observation, and authorities are working to trace potential sources of exposure.
Meanwhile, Switzerland reported a new confirmed case of hantavirus, adding to concerns about the spread of the disease. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely and have advised travelers to take precautions, including avoiding contact with rodents and their droppings.
The cruise ship industry has faced increased scrutiny over health protocols, and this latest outbreak underscores the challenges of managing infectious diseases in confined environments. The WHO continues to gather data and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
