One Dead in Fire at Toronto Seniors Building

One person has died following a fire late Sunday at a seniors residence in downtown Toronto. The incident occurred at a highrise building near Yonge and Gerrard Streets.

Firefighters Faced Heavy Smoke and Heat

Toronto Fire Services responded to the scene around 10 p.m. and discovered a fire in a unit on the eighth floor. Chief Jim Jessop reported that crews encountered heavy smoke and heat and had to force their way into the unit.

“Crews immediately started their primary search while other crews arrived to back them up and start firefighting operations,” Jessop said.

Victim Found in Bedroom

One individual was found without vital signs in a bedroom. Paramedics performed lifesaving measures before transporting the person to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released the age or gender of the victim.

Investigation Underway

Toronto Fire Services is working with the Ontario Fire Marshal to determine the origin and cause of the fire. In a statement on social media, TFS expressed their condolences: “Our deepest condolences to all of those affected by this tragedy.”
