Harvey Weinstein Suffers Heart Failure at Rikers Island

Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein suffered heart failure while incarcerated at Rikers Island prison facility in New York City approximately two weeks ago, according to TMZ. The 74-year-old was already battling pneumonia when the medical incident occurred.

Weinstein experienced difficulty breathing and was transferred to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in Manhattan. Medical staff placed him on an IV, attached a heart monitor, and administered antibiotics for his pneumonia. He has remained at Bellevue since admission.

Legal Status and Upcoming Sentencing

Weinstein was being held in the Queens jail complex while awaiting sentencing for a 2025 sexual assault conviction. His sentence is expected to be handed down in September 2026. The heart failure episode adds to a series of health complications for the former Hollywood mogul.

Background and #MeToo Movement

Once a powerhouse producer behind films such as Shakespeare in Love, Pulp Fiction, Gangs of New York, and executive producer of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Weinstein became the central figure of the #MeToo movement in 2017 when numerous sexual assault allegations surfaced. More than 100 women have accused him of sexual harassment or assault, including Rose McGowan, Ashley Judd, Mira Sorvino, Salma Hayek, and Gwyneth Paltrow. The #MeToo movement, a global social awareness initiative against sexual abuse and assault, was propelled by Weinstein's case.

Weinstein's legal troubles continue as he awaits his sentence. His lawyers have previously claimed that two jurors in his trial were bullied into convicting him and later regretted their decision, but the conviction stands. The heart failure incident marks another chapter in the downfall of a once-dominant Hollywood figure.
