Guelph man arrested for headbutting paramedic

A Guelph man has been arrested after allegedly headbutting a paramedic who was treating him, Waterloo Regional Police reported.

Incident details

Police say the assault occurred on Wednesday evening when paramedics were called to a residence on the city's west side to assist a man in medical distress. While being attended to, the suspect became agitated and struck one of the paramedics in the face with his head.

The paramedic sustained minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment. The suspect, a 32-year-old Guelph man, was taken into custody at the scene.

Charges laid

The man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault of a peace officer. He was held for a bail hearing on Thursday.

“This type of violence against frontline healthcare workers is completely unacceptable,” said Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Const. Ashley Dietrich. “Our paramedics put themselves at risk every day to help others, and they deserve to work without fear of being attacked.”

The Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Service confirmed the paramedic involved is recovering and has been offered support services.
