Former Saskatoon Police Chief Leads SHA Security Review

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is undergoing an independent security review led by former Saskatoon police chief and Saskatchewan chief coroner Clive Weighill, now executive director of Buckingham Security Services Ltd. The six-month assessment aims to evaluate current security practices and recommend improvements to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and staff across SHA facilities.

Scope and Objectives of the Review

The review will focus exclusively on security and safety protocols, avoiding medical practices. It will include visits to SHA facilities, as well as First Nations and Metis organizations. Specific locations such as La Loche, Swift Current, Shellbrook, Weyburn, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Kamsack, and Melfort may receive additional support from third-party security services to address regional needs while the review develops long-term provincial recommendations.

Background and Motivation

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health contracted Buckingham Security Services following concerns from healthcare workers and patients about systemic security issues. Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill emphasized the government's commitment to safety, stating, "The review being conducted by Clive Weighill will inform further enhancements to safety in hospitals throughout our province." SHA CEO Andrew Will added that the review "provides an important opportunity to strengthen safety across our facilities."

Previous Security Enhancements

The SHA has already implemented several security upgrades, including the installation of metal detectors at emergency and main hospital entrances in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, and North Battleford. The review will build on these measures to identify additional improvements.

Public Input

Individuals with lived experiences relevant to security are encouraged to share suggestions via email at safety@buckinghamsecurity.com. The review is expected to conclude within six months, with recommendations aimed at enhancing safety for all stakeholders.
