New Extendicare Countryside Facility Welcomes MPP Jamie West
Residents and staff at Extendicare Countryside, Sudbury's newest long-term care home, expressed enthusiasm for their new digs during a visit from Sudbury MPP Jamie West on September 14, 2024. The facility, which opened earlier this year, replaces an older building and offers modern amenities designed to enhance comfort and care.
Modern Amenities and Improved Living Conditions
The new home features private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, larger common areas, and upgraded medical equipment. Staff noted that the improved layout allows for better infection control and more efficient care delivery. According to Extendicare officials, the facility includes 128 beds, with plans to expand to 160 in response to growing demand.
Positive Feedback from Residents
Resident Mary Thompson, 82, said, "The new building is so bright and spacious. I have my own room with a big window, and the staff are wonderful." Another resident, John Kowalski, added, "It feels more like a home than an institution. I love the garden and the activity room."
Staff Applaud New Work Environment
Staff members also praised the facility. Nurse Sarah Lee commented, "The new design makes our jobs easier and safer. We have more space to move, better storage for supplies, and the technology helps us spend more time with residents." The home employs approximately 150 staff, including nurses, personal support workers, and recreation therapists.
MPP West Commends Investment in Long-Term Care
MPP Jamie West highlighted the importance of such facilities in addressing Ontario's long-term care needs. "This is a significant investment in our community," he said. "Our seniors deserve dignified, comfortable living spaces, and Extendicare Countryside sets a high standard." The visit included a tour of the building and conversations with residents and staff.
Part of Broader Long-Term Care Modernization
The new home is part of Ontario's broader plan to modernize long-term care, with over 30,000 new beds planned across the province. Extendicare Countryside replaces an older facility that had been in operation since the 1970s. The project cost approximately $40 million, funded through public-private partnerships.
