New Long-Term Care Home Coming to Cornwall
The Government of Prince Edward Island has announced plans for an 80-bed long-term care facility in Cornwall, a community experiencing rapid growth. The project aims to meet the increasing demand for senior care services across the province.
Details of the Announcement
Premier Rob Lantz, along with Health and Wellness Minister Cory Deagle, Cornwall Mayor Minerva McCourt, and Mount Continuing Care Community director of nursing Rochelle Visser, made the announcement on June 19, 2026. The facility will be operated by Mount Continuing Care Community, a trusted provider of long-term care on the Island.
The new home is expected to reduce waitlists and provide modern, comfortable accommodations for residents. It will feature private and semi-private rooms, common areas, and specialized care units to support seniors with varying levels of need.
Addressing Growing Needs
Cornwall's population has been rising steadily, and the demand for long-term care beds has outpaced supply. This facility is part of a broader provincial strategy to expand healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality care for aging residents.
Construction is slated to begin in the coming months, with completion expected within two years. The project will create jobs during construction and ongoing employment for healthcare professionals.
Community Support
Mayor McCourt expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that it will allow seniors to remain in their community close to family and friends. Premier Lantz emphasized the government's commitment to investing in healthcare and supporting Islanders through every stage of life.
This announcement marks a significant step forward in enhancing long-term care services in Prince Edward Island.
